Why Is Your AC Running All Day But Your House Still Isn't Cool?

It's the middle of a hot Toronto summer, your AC has been running non-stop, and your house still doesn't feel like the temperature you set. Sound familiar?

A little extra runtime on scorching days is normal. But if your system just won't stop and your home stays warm anyway, something's probably off. Here are the most common reasons this happens, and what to do about it.

1. A Dirty Air Filter

This is the first thing to check, and often the easiest fix. A clogged filter chokes off airflow, so your AC has to work harder and longer to cool the same space. Check it monthly during peak season and swap it out when it looks dirty.

2. Poor Airflow Through the House

Closed vents, blocked registers, dirty coils, or duct issues can all stop cool air from actually reaching your rooms. If one room is freezing and another is stuffy, airflow is likely the culprit.

3. A Blocked Outdoor Unit

Your condenser needs open space to release the heat it's pulled out of your home. Leaves, grass clippings, and debris piled around it make that harder, and make your whole system less efficient.

4. Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant is what actually does the cooling. If there's a leak or the level is low, your AC will run longer, cool less, and sometimes blow air that's not even that cold. This one needs a licensed HVAC tech, not a DIY fix.

5. An Undersized System

Sometimes there's nothing "wrong", the AC is just too small for the house. This shows up a lot in Toronto homes with big windows, older insulation, or additions that were never accounted for when the system was sized.

6. Cool Air Is Escaping

Your AC can be working perfectly and your house can still feel warm if cool air is leaking out through gaps around windows, doors, or poor insulation. In that case, the system is stuck fighting a losing battle against outdoor heat sneaking in.

7. A Misreading Thermostat

If your thermostat sits in direct sunlight, near a heat source, or somewhere unusually warm, it may not reflect what the rest of the house actually feels like, which throws off when your AC turns on and off.

When Should You Call Someone?

If your AC keeps running and the house still isn't reaching temperature, especially alongside weak airflow, strange noises, high humidity, or warm air from the vents, it's time to get it looked at. And resist the urge to just crank the thermostat lower; if the real issue is airflow, refrigerant, or an equipment problem, a lower setpoint won't fix it. It'll just run longer for the same result.
